New Delhi: The Road Transport Minister, Mr.Nitin Gadkari said in the Question Hour in Lok Sabha meeting, that his ministry has completed safety audit of around 1.6 lakh bridges in the country and establish more than 100 structures in damaged condition and Over 100 bridges in different parts of the country may collapse anytime and they need immediate attention to reform it. He also informed that British–era Bridge over the Savitri River in the Konkan region of Maharashtra was collapsed last year and wants to take into the parliament notice, that not to repeat such accidents in the future.
Mr. Nitin Gadakari said his ministry had last year launched a special project to create data of all bridges and drains in the country as part of the steps to prevent accidents, Referring to the delay in works on various road projects, the minister said this has been happening due to issues related to land purchase, violation and environmental clearance, He said road projects worth Rs. 3.85 lakh crore were delayed due to various reasons in the past and most of these issues were resolved and their works are in progress.
