New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the notion that its judges are supporters and whatever the government wants, they will do it.
The Hon’ble Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, who is sitting with the Hon’ble Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Hon’ble Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, dismissed the allegation made by a senior advocate in the TV debate in this regard. During the hearing of a petition related to comments made by former UP minister Azam Khan, the judge made an observation.
The Hon’ble Justice Chandrachud said, “The former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association had said on the electronic media (during the debate on the transfer of Justice Jayant Patel of Karnataka High Court to Allahabad High Court) that the Supreme Court had supremacy over the supporters of the government. That is not true. Nobody has to come and sit in court one day so that in favor of citizens’ rights. Referring to misuse of social media, where people spread false information about the court proceedings without examination, the Hon’ble Justice Chandrachud said that often the verbal observations of the judges and the judges Discussions between lawyers are given in this court’s decision and all types of comments are being made. The CJI said that there should be a distinction between free speech and the right to misuse of others.
