New Delhi: In the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet on Monday increased the benefits of the Seventh Pay Commission and the government-assisted the colleges in the teaching faculty of Central and State Universities.
The Cabinet has approved the increase in the salary of 7.58 Lakh teachers and other equivalent education workers, Education Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Wednesday.
The revision in pay scale will be in the range of 22 to 28 percent. This will increase the salary of teachers in the salary of Rs 10,400 and Rs 49,800. The scales approved will be applicable from January 1, 2016. “According to this measure, the annual central financial liability is about Rs 9,800 crore,” the government said in a press release.
This decision will benefit teaching personnel in 106 universities / colleges, which are funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Human Resource Development Ministry (MHRD).
The Teacher in the 329 universities funded by state governments, 12,912 government and private aided colleges affiliated with teachers and state public universities will also benefit from this decision. “In addition, in the revised pay package, teachers of 119 central funded technical institutes like IIT, IISc, IIM, IISER, IIIT, and NITIE will be included,” said the release.
For institutions funded by state government, revised pay scales will be required to be adopted by the concerned states. Due to the revision of pay scales, the central government will bear the additional burden of states.
The government said in the release, “Proposed measures in the revised pay structure are expected to improve the quality of higher education and attract and retain talent.”
