The Delhi government has banned hookah bars in the city and has asked Delhi Police and Municipal Corporations to immediately cancel the license of the restaurant with hookah bars.
The Health Minister Satyendar Jain had said on October 31 that according to Section 4 of COTA (Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act), smoking in hooks is not allowed in non smoking areas as well. He said that the Center had issued a notification in May, in which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was completely banned from using hookah.
The Jain said that the State Tobacco Control cell has carried out many raids in various parts of Delhi, and chemical analysis showed that “the presence of nicotine appears in significant amounts in almost all samples”. That, in spite of claiming that they were using herbal products.
“However, the action is still awaited and the violation is still going on in many parts of Delhi,” he said.
The Hookah, smoking is a popular choice in rural areas, especially in the elderly. But for the last few years urban youth have gained popularity. The People consider hookah to be a safe alternative to smoking without feeling it that it is even more harmful and has adverse effects on their health.
