Cairo: An Egyptian lawyer has said that it is “national duty” to harass and rape those girls who expose clothing, such as ripped jeans, resentment arises.
That, Mr. Nabih al-Wahsh, a famous conventional, made a controversial comment during a TV panel show debate, discuss a draft law on prostitution.
“Are you happy when you see a girl walking down the street half with her behind showing?” The lawyer had said on Al-Assema in the beginning of this month, “I say that when a girl walks about like this, then it is the duty of patriotism for a national duty to commit sexual harassment and rape her.”
That, Mr. Al-Wahsh’s remarks have created a rage across the country and the National Council for Women of Egypt has announced that it is planning to file a complaint against the TV channel. It also issued a petition for media outlets that would like to avoid providing a platform for those who make provocative comments to encourage violence against women.
The National Council also said that it would file a complaint against Al-Wahsh and dismiss his argument. It has been said in a statement that “all members of the Council have condemned and disappointed this statement which clearly promotes rape and sexual harassment.”
The Councilor Maya Morsi argued that his comment is an actual violation of the Egyptian constitution, which makes explicit efforts to protect women’s rights.
