Dubai: The PV Sindhu won the silver medal after winning the title 21-15, 12-21, 19-21 against Japan’s top seed Akane Yamaguchi in the Dubai World Superseries Final. Sindhu, who defeated Chen Yufei in the semifinals on Saturday, is the only Indian to be present in the final in the tournament. Saina Nehwal was the first, but she failed to beat China’s Wang Yihan in the 2011 final. Sindhu won the first game against Japan, which was to win it easily. Yamaguchi made a fierce return to win the second game. Sindhu did not make many errors, but it was also tired. The third game was a competition of fine margins, in which Yamaguchu poked it to the very end. In the whole match, ranges ranging from 31-51 shots were included. On some occasions, both the players were almost out of stamina
After a narrow defeat in the Rio Olympics and the Glasgow World Championship, Sindhu had a third defeat in a big final.
The 5-2 is coming into the match with a head-to-head record, Sindhu, who had defeated Yamaguchi in the previous group match on Friday, failed to eliminate the weaker Japanese, who had better precision and athleticism to win the title.
The 22-year-old Indian, who is playing in the final of the fourth Super Series of the year, thus, could not move ahead with the mixed doubles pair of pair of Jwala Gutta and V Diju, who also finished runners-up in 2009.
The PV Sindhu had won two SuperSeries titles in the India Open and Korea Open, besides reaching the final in the Hong Kong Open and the World Championship this year.
