Madurai: A 19-year-old observer was sentenced to death on the bull-taming festival Jallikattu on Monday in Palamedu in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu on Monday.
According to the reports, the deceased was identified as S Kalimuthu, a native of Sanarpatti in Dindigul district. This incident took place at the end of the field, where a large number of people, especially the youth, gathered to pursue a bull and take wrestle along with it.
That, about 25 persons was hurt in the incident. Five of them have been sent to a government hospital, one of which is critical. The Festival is celebrated as a tradition to mark the harvest festival. Many people were injured in Jallikuttu events since Sunday.
The Supreme Court banned Jallikuttu in 2014. After this the workers had said that this extreme animal constitutes cruelty. In 2017, after a massive demonstration, Tamil Nadu introduced a law to bypass the verdicts of the apex court.
