Hyderabad: The Telangana State Council of Science & Technology (TSCOST) and National Green Corps (NGC) jointly organized the National Science Day (NSD) Celebrations at Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad on 28-2-2018. The theme of National Science Day (NSD) Celebrations for the year 2018 is “Science & Technology for a Sustainable Future”. The Day is observed to mark the novel discovery of Raman Effect which was declared by the great Indian Physicist C. V. Raman on 28th February, 1928. C. V. Raman brought the first Nobel Award for the country in 1930. National Science Day is a great day for Indian Science and scientific community.
The Chief Guest, Jogu Ramanna Hon’ble Minister for Forests, Environment & BC Welfare, Govt. of Telangana formally launched the State wide National Science Day Celebrations. Speaking on the occasion, the Hon’ble Minister advocated the need for greater awareness and utilization of Science & Technology for achieving sustainable development and urged the students and people from different walks of life to pursue Science & Technology heartily.
With an objective of encouraging Students towards Research in Science & Mathematics, Jogu Ramanna Hon’ble Minister for Forests, Environment & BC Welfare, Govt. of Telangana announced an important scheme of presenting eight (8) cash awards per year @ Rs. 25,000 each to extra ordinary Research Scholars in Science ( 4 awards ) & Mathematics ( 4 awards ) to be implemented by TSCOST from this year.
He further announced that Awareness Camps will be organized through TSCOST on Science & Technology to empower Youth on gaining knowledge of Digital Payments, Online Registrations for Adhaar Cards, Pan Cards and other Government schemes including awareness on ill effects of Superstitions and awareness on science behind miracles etc., in Adilabad and other districts of the State.
The Hon’ble Minister thanked the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi for catalyzing and supporting Programs of National Science Day Celebrations in the State.
The Hon’ble Minister informed that the TSCOST is supporting, implementing/ co-coordinating several programmes with focus on science and its applications all over the state in association with Universities, Research Institutions, Colleges, Schools, NGOs and Line Departments.

Mr. B. Mallesh S/o. B. Hanumanthu, Sircilla for his innovation – Talking Tree Gadget when equipped to a Plant/ Sapling acts as a Sensor and in case of insufficient moisture content in the soil surrounding it, produces sound “Water me otherwise I would die” whenever any person passes by the side of the plant.
Mr. Jawwad Patel, B.Tech student from Hyderabad for his innovation – Dewdrop Device that converts Air into Potable Water, which is a revolutionary concept particularly in extra ordinary circumstances.
Two (2) Child Scientists Mr. Mehendra Reddy of Kamareddy District and Miss Areeba Aymen of Nizamabad District who have shown extra ordinary performance by finding a place in the Top 50 Projects category ( out of overall 644 projects ) after thorough scrutiny of the projects and judging the intellect of the Child Scientists at Science City, Ahmedabad during 27-31 December 2017.
The B. Kalyana Chakravarthy, IAS, Director Generator, EPTRI, participating as the Honorary Guest, said that Science is the key for all the development and cautioned for application of Science only for achieving sustainable development. He advised the youth to take up innovative solutions for solving crucial problems prevailing in the Society. He described the path of evolution of Science and the most significant scientific advancements ranging from environmental issues, disease eradication, space exploration, energy production, information highway to name a few. Biotechnology is making a major impact on agriculture, health, environment, industry and pharmaceuticals. Communication at lower costs, with greater accessibility, is another product of technology, he explained.
The Honorary Guest, Dr. Geeta Vemuganti, Dean and Professor, Dept. of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad delivered the keynote address on the topic “Working together for Science – Need of the hour”. Research findings emanated from Universities and R&D Institutions should be implemented for the welfare of the public through TSCOST, she said and opined that Observation of NSD attempts at generating scientific minded citizens. Science has contributed a great deal too human welfare. Through the gospel of reason and experimental observation, by which it works, it has enabled man to acquire intellectual and mental excellence, she explained.
Smt. G. Krishnaveni, Joint Secretary to Govt., Environment, Forests, Science & Technology Dept., Govt. of Telangana and Member Secretary (FAC), TSCOST presided over the function and explained about the NSD programs chalked out for implementation in the State.
Staff of TSCOST and NGC, several Scientists, Academicians, Students, Research Scholars participated in the program.
