The Summer Samurai camps declared open by the Scheduled Caste Development Department Minister G. Jagadish Reddy amid thunderous cheers from students, officers and staff at Ravindra Bharathi, Hyderabad. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said, `the government of Telangana is carrying forward the vision of Dr BR Ambedkar through providing quality education to poor children under the KG-PG Mission. He stressed on the fact that education is a game changer in breaking the shackles of inequality and deprivation. While thanking the Chief Minister, the government is committed to provide the best possible education and opportunities to poor children, so that no poor child in the state should feel left out because of poverty.
The Minister congratulated the SCDD Secretary Jyothi Buddha Prakash and Praveen Kumar, Secretary, TSWREIS, for organizing as many as 57 camps in 85 centres across Telangana, involving close to 50000 children from social and tribal welfare residential institutions and social welfare hostels. He appreciated Praveen Kumar and his team for meticulously designing the summer camps to help children take charge of their lives with confidence. The entire country is trying to emulate the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational model, the minister remarked.
While Speaking to media persons, Jyothi Buddha prakash, Secretary, SCDD said, camps like horse riding, computer coding, water sports, mobile Apps, wrestling, stock market, mountaineering, multimedia, classical and Western music, theatre arts, boxing, weightlifting, jewellery making and robotics are beyond the reach of poor students owing to poverty. But, thanks to the Summer Samurai camps, all these camps are made a reality under the KG-PG Mission.
The Dr RS Praveen Kumar, Secretary, said “the spirit behind the introduction of the summer camps is that exposure; opportunity and attitude take poor students out of poverty and ignorance. We do not want children from poor family backgrounds end up as child labourers, school dropouts and victims of early child marriages. We want to break this vicious cycle and put them into the orbit of higher education and economic prosperity by engaging them constructively in summer vacation. We are also conducting a mega camp for close to 1000 parents on roles and responsibilities of parents on children’s education and upbringing. The number of camps increased from 30 in 2017 to 57 in 2018”.
The camps will be abuzz with a number of fun filled activities like screening of films, quiz competitions, debates, yoga and scintillating cultural programmes, besides regular camp activities. The camps mainly focus on imparting communication, collaborative, scientific, decision-making, inter-personal, problem-solving and leadership skills.
The Secretary thanked the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and the minister for Scheduled Caste Development Department, G. Jagadish Reddy, for approving the summer camps and Bharath Darshan tour under the KG-PG Mission. No state government in the country has taken such a radical decision with regard to the overall development of marginalized children, the Secretary remarked.
