Ahmedabad: At least 50 farmers were detained by the police on Sunday as thousands of farmers protested against the proposal of a Gujarat government company to take possession of the land in the proposed lignite plant in a village of Bhavnagar district. However, the local head of a farmer group has alleged that the police manhandled the protesters including women and children, and at least five persons were injured in this process.
That, Two years ago Gujarat Power Corporation Limited had acquired 3,377 acres of land from 1250 villages of 12 villages under Ghoga Taluka in Bhavnagar, which was for setting up its proposed lignite plant. Conversely, in all these years the land was in possession of the farmers who were cultivating it. The Farmers are now opposing the company’s bid to take possession of the acquired land. A local farmer claimed that the farmers are performing peaceful protests.
Police manhandled protesters, including women and children, and at least five persons were injured in this process, Farmer alleged. At least 10 out of 50 protesters who were detained by the police were women, they claimed.
