A One-day National Seminar on ‘Mines Safety Management & Sustainable Mineral Development’ was jointly organized by the Mining Engineers Association of India and Directorate General of Mines Safety, Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt. of India on 20.01.2019. The National Seminar was supported by the State Government of Telangana.
The Seminar was held from 9.00 AM to 4.30 PM with Inaugural Session. The Dignitaries graced the Inaugural Session were Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Principal Secretary to Govt., Industries and Commerce Dept, Government of Telangana as Chief Guest and Prithul Kumar, Director, Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India as Special Guest and BRV Susheel Kumar, Director of Mines & Geology and Chairman, Mining Engineers Association of India, Hyderabad Chapter; Dr G Malsur, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation Ltd; Dr H.S.Venkatesh, Director, National Institute of Rock Mechanics; V Lakshmi Narayana, Dy.Director Mines Safety (Rtd.); A.K.Kothari, President, Mining Engineers Association of India and M Narsaiah, Director, Mines Safety, South Central Zone, Hyderabad. The Key Note Address of P.K.Sarkar Director General, Directorate of Mines Safety, Govt. of India was read by M Narsaiah, Director, DGMS. Hyderabad as Guest of Honour.
The dignitaries in the inaugural session emphasized on the safety aspects in mining and health of workers in the mines. The Minerals constitute the backbone of economic growth of India and to augment mineral production, the mining companies are less concentrating on safety of men and machinery in the mines.
Three technical sessions were held in the National Seminar. The first session was on ‘Safety Management’; second session on ‘Safety Management Case Studies’ and third session on ‘Technology for Sustainable Development’. 13 technical papers were presented on the ways to achieve zero harm in mines; implementation of safety management plan; remote operations in mining; safety management in Singareni Collieries Co.Ltd; deep mechanized long wall; safety in iron ore mines; innovative deformation monitoring instruments; safety in surface mine blasting; remote ground vibrations monitoring; rock breaking and safe mining and robotics for safe mining.
During the Panel Discussions, the dignitaries, speakers, mining fraternity, stakeholders have raised their apprehensions & queries on safety aspects deliberated during the technical sessions. The Panel Team consisting of BRV Susheel Kumar, Director of Mines & Geology, Telangana; Sahoo, NMDC; VD Raja Gopal, Former Director of Mines & Geology; Sri V Lakshmi Narayana, Dy.Director Mines Safety (Rtd.); S Ramesh, Asst.Director, Directorate of Geology & Mining, Tamil Nadu; Sri M Narsaiah, Director, DGMS, Hyderabad clarified the queries mainly on the safety management in mines and their effective implementation for the safety of workers in the mines.
The One-day National Seminar on “Mines Safety Management & Sustainable Mineral Development” finally deliberated to inculcate safety management system in the workers in all mining areas viz., small, medium & large mines. Safety to be the foremost priority in the mining and scrupulous implementation of Sustainable Framework Development (SFD) formulated by Govt. of India including Star Rating System for observing conservation, safety and reclamation of mines, consequently augmentation of mineral production leading to sustainable and conservation of mineral wealth.
In the Panel Discussions & Valedictory Function, it was emphasized strongly for planning and implementation of Safety Management System in the mines.
