A 12-year-old boy admitted to a hospital in Kerala’s Kozhikode with symptoms of Nipah virus died on Sunday morning.
The boy, a resident of Chuloor in Chathamangalam panchayat, was admitted to the hospital on 1st September. His sample, which was sent to the Pune National Institute of Virology, confirmed the presence of Nipah virus. Seventeen persons included in his contact list have been kept under observation and will be testing for Nipah virus.
The central government has sent a team from the National Center for Disease Control to Kerala. The team will provide technical support to the state. After getting information about Nipah infection, the state government also held a high level meeting of health officials late on Saturday night.
The Health Minister Veena George said the primary contact list of the dead showed no symptoms, but they were being monitored. Three samples plasma, CSF and serum were found infected. He was admitted to the hospital four days ago with high fever. But on Saturday his condition got worse. We had sent his samples for testing a day before yesterday, the minister said. The neighboring Kannur and Malappuram districts should be on alert.
