New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the Center to set up special fast track courts to settle pending cases against the legislators on Wednesday. A bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and Navin Sinha gave the Center six weeks to present the plan for the establishment of such courts with cost.
That, On Tuesday the court had asked for 1,581 cases from 2014, of which MPs and MLAs were included, in which information was given about how many of these years were disposed of and how many people were convicted or acquitted, This case will be heard on December 13.
The Election Commission (EC) told the court that it supports the insensitivity of politics through the entire ban on members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies who can contest elections even after conviction in criminal cases. It also said that the Election Commission and Law Commission were contemplated by the government for disqualification in the life time of the politician’s convicted criminal cases.
The court had heard the petition of Bharatiya Janata Party spokesman and lawyer Ashwani Kumar. He challenged the provisions of the Representation of People Act, 1951, who punished the politicians guilty of contesting elections after six years of service of the jail term. Arguably demanded the Center and the Election Commission to fix the minimum educational qualification and fix the maximum age limit for the candidates.
