Kerala: A science exhibition in Kerala became potentially dangerous, as eight students suffered 10 percent burns. This incident took place during a fun demo of “fire without matches” in an exhibition of NSS College near Parssala on Tuesday.
That, four of the injured out of eight students were from class five, from a nearby government high school, while four were from NSS College. The injured students were admitted to SAT Hospital, and four other college students were subjected to minor interference. The Burns are not serious, but students must stay in the hospital for three or four days to stop the spread of infection from the wounds, Orassana Kumar, Medical College Coordinator.
The injured school students are Roshan, Lijeesh, Anu Abraham and Krishna Varun. The Hospital officials also said that the children suffered 10 percent burns. That the students of the school were watching the fire trick organized by the students of college and chemistry department when the incident took place.
The accident occurred after potassium permanganate crystals stored in a jar exceeded sulfur acid, the Students demonstrated the flammable property of two compounds because they had come into contact with open jars.
Dr. K Mohan Kumar, NSS college principal said that I am sad that with the fun experiment science has made the students shock, wounded and uncomfortable, Next time be careful. He also said that he was very relieved that the children were saved from minor injuries, and it was totally unacceptable because different departments in the college regularly organized science experiments to educate students about science every day.
A retired chemistry professor of CET expressed concern over the possible dangers of negligence in such experiments. He said that this incident once again showed the possibility of danger when handling such experiences with uncontrolled hands, and therefore better avoided than the exhibitions.
