Chennai: A 21-year-old female software engineer was killed while her mother and younger sister suffered severe burn injuries after a separated friend of the girl had set them on fire in her apartment in Adambakkam on Monday night, allegedly after the deceased woman turned down his proposal for marriage, The accused M. Akash 22-year-old college dropout has been arrested by the police.
The Deceased woman, B. Tech graduate S. Indhuja was working as a trainee in a software firm and was staying with her family in an apartment in Saraswati Nagar 7th Street in the city of Adambakkam. Her father, Shanmagam was away on the job in Canada, the police said.
After studying together at school, Akash and Indhuja knew each other from their teens. Police investigation revealed that the boy had developed emotions in the spirit and he had proposed her. The deceased turned down his proposal by saying that he was unemployed, police sources said.

After hearing the screams, the neighbors rushed to their help. Indhuja was declared spot dead by a paramedic team, while her mother Renuka and sister Nivedha were taken to a private hospital and shifted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. A hospital authority said, “They have received 49 percent and 23 percent burns, injuries respectively, and they are in serious condition.” Indhuja’s father, Shanmugam has been informed and he has returned from Canada, the police said.
