The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad is a leading agency in operational oceanography and will soon complete 21 years of service. It provides well-established services like Tsunami Early Warning, Potential Fishing Zone Advisories and Ocean State Forecasts. It also hosts the International Centre for Operational oceanography recognised as a Category-2 level training Centre by UNESCO. This week, 2 INCOIS scientists have been selected for honours by two highly esteemed organisations.
Dr. M. S. Girishkumar has been selected for the Vocational Excellence Award 2019-2020 for excellence in oceanographic research by the Rotary Club of Hyderabad, Deccan which is a primary unit of Rotary International. Dr. Girishkumar is a senior scientist with the Ocean Observations and Data Management Group at INCOIS. His research interests include air-sea interaction processes, small-scale mixing processes, biogeochemical variability and dynamics in the Tropical Indian Ocean.
The Telangana Academy of Sciences that focuses on state-level advancement and promotion of Science has recognised the contributions of Dr. Abhisek Chatterjee in its recent fellowship election and awards and has selected him as Associate Fellow. Dr. Chatterjee is a senior scientist with the Ocean Modelling & Data Assimilaion Group at INCOIS. His research focuses on ocean modeling, equatorial dynamics, climate variability and biogeochemistry.
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), is a body under Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India with the mandate to synthesize, generate, promote, provide and coordinate various endeavors in the field of ocean sciences, ocean observations, satellite oceanography and ocean information & advisory services. The National Tsunami Early Warning Centre, recognized as the best tsunami-warning centre in the World is also established at ESSO-INCOIS and has been identified, by IOC/UNESCO, as Regional Tsunami Warning Centre for the Indian Ocean Region. INCOIS also hosts the International Centre for Operational oceanography recognised as a Category-2 level training Centre by UNESCO.
ESSO-INCOIS was set up on February 3, 1999 and will complete 21 years of service while celebrating its Foundation Day on February 03, 2020 (Monday). On this occasion, an “Open House” programme is planned to be organised at INCOIS and student groups (Class VI – X, college) are invited to visit the various facilities at the organization by registering their interest through email. Prior registration subject to confirmation by INCOIS, is mandatory to attend the programme. Groups will be confirmed on first-come-first-serve basis. Each confirmed participating institution will preferably be allowed a maximum of 100 students.
