Mumbai: In a tragic Incident, At least 22 people were killed and 39 others were injured in a stampede on a foot-over bridge at Elphinstone Road railway station in Mumbai on Friday.
The President Ramnath Kovind expressed his grief over the deaths of 22 passengers and said: “Concerned with the loss of life in a stampede in Mumbai, condolences to the bereaved families, prayer with the injured.” The Rs.5 Lakh each will be compensated for the relatives of the dead, the state government will bear the medical expenses of the injured,” said Vinod Tawde.
The incident occurred due to the crowds between Elphinstone and Lower Parel railway stations, this incident took place at 10:45 in the morning.
Railways have released helpline numbers: Churchgate station- 022 22039840, Mumbai Central Station- 022 23051665 and Elphinstone Road Station- 022 24301614.
This day comes when Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is on a trip to Mumbai.
Accident Relief Medical Equipment Train was brought to the crash site and immediate medical assistance was provided to the victims. The injured were taken to KEM Hospital.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the spot at around 1 am to help rescue operations. The reason for the stampede was not immediately known.
A Saxena, DG (Public Relations), Railway said, “People were waiting at the station due to the sudden rain, but when the rain stopped, disorder took place and the stampede went out.”
The police, however, said that they suspect a big short circuit near the bridge, which caused panic and people started running, which resulted in a stampede.
The Passengers said that they complained about the bridge, which is narrow and not strong enough to take a busy crowd, many times. They also demanded that the bridge be repaired.
